Mastering Solus Lost: A Comprehensive Guide to Battle Mechanics
Today let's walk through how to use the battle mechanic in Solus Lost. We're going to use the star strider as our example card. We will ignore the "special ability" for the sake of this tutorial.
When you encounter an enemy you can do one of two things: You can either engage in battle, or use your warp drive to evade the altercation. If you choose to evade, you must age your character 10 years as a result of going into hyper space. If you choose to engage, you will use your D20 to fight your enemy.
Each enemy has 3 values: A defense value, an attack value, and a damage value. Their defense value is the minimum number you must roll in order to inflict damage on your enemy. So if your enemy has a defense value of 12, you must roll 12 or higher to cause damage.
Their attack value is the maximum number the enemy needs to roll in order to inflict damage on you. For example, if your enemy has an attack value of 7, then if you roll a 7 or less, your enemy causes damage to your ship.
If you roll a number that is between the defense and attack values, then you both receive one damage point. So in our scenario, rolling a number between 8 through 11 will cause damage to both of you.
The enemy's damage value is the number of hit points you must inflict in order to destroy the ship. In this scenario we would need to inflict 2 points of damage to star strider.
If you reference your scale in your instruction manual, you will notice certain rolls will inflict more damage to your enemy, as well as to you.
We hope this tutorial helps with any questions you may have, and we've made a free reference table available for download at wolfboyeg.com/battle.
